Lucas Mgenge’s story: He embraced the idiom “Get up and work towards your dreams.” After pursuing various job opportunities, he found his breakthrough with a business-oriented learnership at Edge Training. “(00:21) {Praises and clan names} Zulu dancing (ukugiya). My name is Lucas; surname is Mgenge {clan names} they also call me “Custard” as my nickname. Home is eMpangeni, in an area called eManzamnyama. I grew up here from a young age till the person I am today. From waking up in the morning to do home chores. Taking the goats out to graze, feeding the chickens and returning them to their cages in the afternoon. As I grew up, I attended my primary school and school years in eManzamnyama.
(01:07) Through the years growing up what always touched my heart the most was how elder would take care of the family, at the end of every month he would walk in with groceries in his hands bringing joy to the entire family. There is an idiom that’s always hit home with me that means “Get up and work towards your dreams”, with that knowledge I stood up and arose to the challenge to find myself employment.
(01:29) My first employment was as contract worker in Ballito, and though I worked there I could not grasp my dreams, then I heard of the learnership opportunities at Edge Training. I applied for a learnership at Edge Training and to my luck I was accepted. I left the contract in Ballito knowing I have found a better opportunity, I then moved to Durban central knowing I’ve found a once in a lifetime opportunity to study a business oriented learnership
(02:19) This learnership has change my life in such a way that I can now bring groceries now. I bring joy to my nieces and nephew and still save up for my future. I must also acknowledge and thank the opportunity they gave me to be groomed in their offices.
